Cast Iron Pipe

Cast iron pipes are manufactured by casting molten iron into molds, producing solid and heavy-duty pipe. The iron is usually alloyed with small amounts of carbon, enhancing its strength and corrosion resistance. Cast iron pipes are also known for their exceptional strength and durability. They can withstand high-pressure conditions and heavy loads, making them suitable for underground and deep-buried installations. Cast iron pipes have a long lifespan and resist damage from fire, rodents, and tree roots.

Although cast iron is susceptible to rust, the interior of cast iron pipes is often coated with a protective layer to prevent corrosion caused by wastewater and sewage. The pipe’s exterior may be treated with a bituminous or epoxy coating to provide additional protection against corrosion. Cast iron pipes are commonly used in plumbing systems, particularly for sewage and wastewater applications. They can efficiently transport solid waste, liquids, and gasses without leaks or blockages. These pipes are commonly found in residential, commercial, and municipal sewer systems, carrying waste from toilets, sinks, and other drainage points to treatment facilities or disposal sites.

Cast iron also has excellent sound-deadening properties, which helps minimize noise and vibrations generated by flowing water or waste within the pipe. This makes it a popular choice for buildings where noise reduction is crucial, such as multi-story residential or commercial structures. Cast iron pipes have been used for many decades and may still be present in older buildings. Cast iron pipes may be replaced with more modern materials like PVC when repairing or retrofitting plumbing systems in such structures. However, in some cases, cast iron pipes are retained and rehabilitated to extend their lifespan.
