Hangers, Supports, and Struts

Hangers, supports, and struts are essential components used to secure, support, and stabilize piping systems. Each serves a specific purpose and is employed based on the system’s requirements, including pipe size, material, operating conditions, and environmental considerations.

Hangers

Hangers suspend pipes from structural elements such as beams, ceilings, walls, or floors. They typically consist of a metal or plastic strap, rod, or bracket that supports the weight of the pipe. Hangers are available in various designs, including clevis hangers, split ring hangers, and band hangers, each suited to different pipe sizes and support requirements. Hangers are installed at regular intervals along the length of the pipe to prevent sagging, ensure proper alignment, and distribute the weight of the pipe evenly.

Supports

Supports provide additional stability and reinforcement to piping systems, particularly when the piping is subjected to significant loads, vibration, or thermal expansion. Supports may include rigid structures such as pipe racks, beams, or frames and specialized components like pipe shoes or cradles that cradle the pipe and distribute its weight over a larger area. Supports are strategically placed to provide adequate support and minimize stress on the piping and surrounding structures.

Struts

Struts, or bracing or trapeze supports, are horizontal or diagonal members that span distances between structural elements and support multiple pipes or conduits. They are commonly used in larger piping systems or where piping runs parallel to structural beams or walls. Struts are typically made from steel or aluminum and are designed to withstand the weight of the supported pipes and any additional loads or forces imposed on the system. They provide stability, rigidity, and alignment to the piping while allowing for thermal expansion and contraction.
